James Lovelock on Environmental Ethics
A Level: Edexcel
A detailed investigation into James Lovelock's key ideas on environmental ethics, including what they are, how they work, and why they're important. This lesson provides a brief biography of James Lovelock, and covers the text of Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth. This includes discussion of the Gaia hypothesis, Gaia's cybernetic systems, and how human beings should behave in order to ensure optimum conditions for living things.
Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth is a fascinating book and well worth reading. It's not very long and makes a number of complex scientific ideas easy to understand. It also includes some carefully selected technical examples that illustrate James Lovelock's most important points, and some personal anecdotes and biographical details. When you finish reading Gaia, you feel like you've gained both a much better understanding of the way the world works and a new friend. If you don't have time to read the whole book then you can check out either the full or short synopsis below, but I'd really recommend buy a copy here. It's a marvellous read and you won't regret it!
